In May 2017, seven Zara Aina theater artists will drive 1,100 miles from NYC to Wilcox County, Alabama to work with the amazing kids at BAMA Kids, Inc.
We are so excited to create another week-long theater and storytelling workshop, culminating in a performance created by the kids themselves for the entire county and community.
First, a little context about Wilcox County from the last census:
⊕ The median income for a household in Wilcox County was $16,646.
⊕ About 39% of the population were below the poverty line, including 48.40% of those under age 18.
Four years ago, in 2012, when Zara Aina was just getting off the ground, our friend — singer/songwriter & guitarist Kate Schutt — suggested that we come down and try out our work and ideas with BAMA Kids, an organization at which she’d been volunteering.
We said Hell Yes! And a group of kids’ lives were changed forever!
We brought our mission:
⊕ using theatrical storytelling and performance to enable at-risk children to recognize their potential and become confident learners who are better prepared to participate actively in their education, community and social lives
To BAMA Kids mission:
⊕ To improve the well-being — both physically and spiritually — of the kids of Wilcox County by providing organized recreational and educational activities, developing and promoting leadership opportunities for them and their parents, and promoting life skills to prevent substance abuse and other harmful activities
AND MAGIC HAPPENED! Kids lives were changed. Our lives were changed.
Zara Aina will return for another week-long theater and storytelling workshop, culminating in a performance created by the kids themselves to which the entire county and community is invited.
Please help us make this trip a reality!
We are raising $4000 to fund the entire cost of the trip — supplies and props for the kids to create their performance, van rental, food for a week for 7 actors and actresses, etc.
We’d love you to help us create magic for the kids at BAMA Kids!
